Miami Township Fire & EMS Launches Long Driveway Program
Miami Township Fire & EMS has implemented a Long Driveway Program to improve emergency response to properties located far from established water sources.
The community risk-reduction initiative identifies, pre-plans and marks driveways that are 900 feet or more from a fire hydrant or other firefighting water source. Clearly marked driveways help firefighters improve response times, conduct rescues, control fires and protect property.
As part of the program, the department surveys participating properties to determine how many fire engines will be needed to supply water. Markers placed along the right side of the driveway indicate the required number of engines—for example, “FIRE 1” indicates one engine is needed, with additional markers used for longer driveways.
When a 911 call comes from a participating property, the markings help dispatchers and emergency crews quickly identify the location and deploy the appropriate resources.
