Long Driveway Program

Miami Township Fire & EMS – Long Driveway Program
To address the challenges of providing fire protection to properties located a significant distance from the nearest water source, Miami Township Fire & EMS has implemented a community risk-reduction initiative known as the Long Driveway Program.
This program is designed to identify, pre-plan, and mark driveways of properties that are 900 feet or more from a fire hydrant or any other water source used for firefighting operations. By preplanning and clearly marking these driveways, we can significantly improve our response times and enhance our ability to perform life-saving rescues, control fires, and protect property.
As part of the program, our department surveys and documents these locations to determine how many fire engines will be needed to lay out enough supply hose in the event of a fire. Driveways that are 900 feet in length will be marked with a reflective red sign (6 inches by 9 inches) mounted on a pole on the right-hand side of the driveway. This sign will read “FIRE 1”, indicating that one fire engine is needed to supply water to the structure. For driveways exceeding 900 feet, additional markers will be placed every 900 feet (e.g., “FIRE 2,” “FIRE 3,” etc.).
When a 911 call is received from a property in the program, dispatchers will immediately relay this critical information to responding crews to ensure appropriate resources are deployed quickly and efficiently.
